Karl Heinrich Marx *0006

Image
Summary Karl Marx was born into a wealthy Jewish family, and his comrade Engels also came from affluence. Their theory of communism arose as a critique of capitalism’s exploitative structure. However, no country has faithfully realized the ideals of communism; even after revolutions, power often shifted to a new elite that continued to oppress the masses. Whether in capitalism or communism, sustaining the ruling class inevitably involves exploiting either other nations or one’s own people. Today, even in so-called advanced nations, the majority of citizens suffer under relative poverty and systemic inequality. Political systems are riddled with division and deception. What we need is not another revolution, but the ability to hold political abusers accountable and elect leaders who genuinely share the people’s realities and values. Marx’s  Das Kapital  is notoriously difficult to understand and has failed to serve as an accessible guide for the working class. Instead of being ...

Meta’s Smart Glasses Come Into Focus

Image
Meta revealed new details about its latest Aria eyeglasses, which aim to give AI models a streaming, multisensory, human perspective.   What’s new:  Meta  described  its Aria Gen 2 smart-glasses platform in a blog post that focuses on capabilities relevant to research in augmented reality, “embodied AI” such as robot training, and “contextual AI” for personal use. Units will be available to researchers later this year. Meanwhile, you can  apply for access to Aria Generation 1  and  download  open source datasets, models, tools, 3D objects, and evals.   How it works:  Aria Generation 2 packs an impressive variety of  technologies  into a package the shape of a pair of glasses and the weight of an egg (around 75 grams), with battery life of 6 to 8 hours. A suite of sensors enables the unit, in real time, to interpret user activity (including hand motions), surroundings, location, and interactions with nearby comp...

Mere Christianity (C.S. Lewis) 06 - Chapter 4. What Lies Behind the Law

Image
Part 1. Right and Wrong as a Clue to the Meaning of the Universe Chapter 4.  What Lies Behind the Law In Chapter 4, C.S. Lewis takes the clue established earlier—the "Law of Human Nature" (the Moral Law)—and poses the most fundamental question about the universe: "What lies behind this law?" Through this question, he logically explores what the inner moral law we experience tells us about the nature of the universe. Two Views and the Limits of Science Lewis begins his discussion by presenting two major views that explain the universe. One is the materialist view, which holds that everything is the product of matter and chance. The other is the religious view, which posits that there is an intelligence and purpose behind the universe. Lewis reminds us that these two views have always coexisted since ancient times, dismissing the prejudice that one is more "modern" than the other. He avoids the old, exhaustive confrontation of "science versus religion...

My Vivaldi

Image
When people think of the violin, they often picture Niccolò Paganini (born 1782). And when it comes to Antonio Lucio Vivaldi (1678–1741), many Koreans may recall the ski resort in Hongcheon named after him or his iconic violin concertos 1 , The Four Seasons . But as for me, when it comes to the violin, my unequivocal choice is Vivaldi. One might even say he feels more “Bach-like” than Johann Sebastian Bach himself. Vivaldi was born in 1678, seven years before Bach’s birth in 1685. If one were to name three composers who truly stirred the waters of Baroque music, it would undoubtedly be Vivaldi, Bach, and George Frideric Handel. It is not that Vivaldi’s music feels like Bach’s—but rather, Bach’s music resonates with the spirit of Vivaldi. Bach deeply admired Vivaldi and loved his compositions. He even arranged many of Vivaldi’s string concertos for keyboard instruments, performing them widely. Thanks to this, Vivaldi’s music became more widely known and gained greater fame. Vivaldi’...
